Avem standarde duble.

Despre asta e vorba. Exact despre asta!

The Romanian Senate added a modification to the law of education that says that no gender studies and no gender lecturing can be allowed in schools and universities. The President contested it at the Constitutional Court, some academics endorsed him. And by the end of October, we are going to have an answer. But still, the fact that some people had this in mind is surprising at least. How do you see this?

I don't know anything about the situation in Romania, of course, but I'm not surprised in a way that these kinds of flashbacks into the ancient past - let me phrase it like this - are happening right now. There's a lot of fragile masculinity out there, at the moment trying to - I don't know - reestablish systems that I thought we had already overcome. They are very scared of losing power.

We will see how strong our democracies are and how they can fight this back. Because it is so necessary to do that.

A recent UNESCO report talks about the way we portray women in schoolbooks, in these traditional homebound roles. And this is happening all across Europe. How can we change that? And how does the fact that a school child is seeing a woman only doing chores is affecting him?

This is a very important issue, because we need to start early to educate our children. The earliest is you start the better. I have a child in kindergarten and he's coming home with some views sometimes that I'm like, okay, where do you get that from? Yesterday, we were in a bookstore. And the title of this children's book said: dolls are not for boys. And of course, it was an ironic title, because the book is probably telling another story, but the title was like this. And he says: yeah, that's right. And I said: why is that right?

So, you know, it starts very early. So we need to intervene very early.

We need to educate our educators. We need to educate the personnel in schools, daycare and kindergarten. They are the ones who are reproducing gender roles and who can, on the other hand intervene and educate the children, we need to offer them different gender roles.

I mean, you're talking to a guy from Germany, we have very, very narrow gender roles, we are really, really struggling. Yes, it is horrible. You can call that retract traditionalization, and I explain it like this; young couples are going into the hospital to get their child delivered, they are entering as modern young couples, and they come out as couples from 1950. So something is happening there. You know, I know a lot of my friends who are living the lives of their parents, or are trying to live the lives of their parents.

They married, have children, a house, whatever, if they are as privileged, as I just described, and they don't, they think that they are modern couples, they don't work on it, they just let it happen. And what happens if they let it happen, you can see that we have this gender care gap. And the gender care gap în Germany is 52,4% and what that means is that every woman în Germany is doing one and a half hours more care work every day than the man. The moment a child is in the household, the care gap skyrockets to 83% and when the woman has the average age of 34 the gender pay gap is way way beyond 100%. We are talking about hours and hours and hours.

This is happening because we still think that women are the default options for taking care of children. There is a child penalty gap. There is this Danish study that shows what happens with the female income when the child is born în the next ten years. The worst child penalty in the world is happening in Germany. 61% less income in the next ten years after a child is born.

My son needs to see me doing care work, my dad needs to experience what is like when daddy is not relaxed because he has this mental load of these house chores and to find a solution in doing some pay work as well. He needs to see and learn that this is both our responsibility.

For example, one of my male colleagues, a journalist as well, thinks that feminism is just propaganda, he thinks that women athletes, for example, exaggerate when they ask sports commentators to stop talking about their physiques, and actually deep down, they want to be looked at. And he also said that, if you are good, or good enough, you will get to your purpose. And that equality can be resumed as: play and win. As simple as that. What would you say to a person who thinks like that?

That depends on which angle can be used to get closer to this person, because it sounds to me like he's got a very, again, narrow idea of what the world looks like. He is obviously part of societal norms. And he thinks that he is entitled to the preconditions that he finds in the world. What he obviously doesn't get is that the world is designed for people like him, and that it might to him feel like a meritocracy, as you said, where people are getting rewarded for being better than others, in a fair way, but it is not like that, because the preconditions are totally different. And he has probably never thought about concepts, such as intersectionality.

He has probably never made up his mind that the way he sees the world has consequences, the way the world opens up to him has consequences for people who are different from him. And that this is the opposite of a fair world and an inclusive world. So I would say to him to educate himself, I mean, he has to, to stop making these very, very tight utterings. Instead, he should be asking questions to people, how the world feels for them. And he has to check on people who are different from him. But I don't know if he's open for it.

I know a lot of guys who are like him, and a lot of them are journalists, by the way. I don't know if there is a connection. But male journalism has a lot to do with entitlement. With people who determine how the world looks like and who write and talk about the world, from their own point of view, pretending it to be a neutral position, and it is absolutely not. So I don't know. It's very tough to challenge these people who think like that. But asking them questions like: do you think the world feels like this for everybody? What about people who are different from you? What about, let's say, a black lesbian woman from the southern hemisphere, who has hasn't had education? Do you think the world to her feels the same as it is for you? And do you think she had the same chances? Do you really think this is a meritocratic world, a meritocratic system we live in? You have to narrow it down and try to stay in the conversation, which is very hard sometimes.

And we're talking about an educated man. But I have another example. A Romanian NGO leader created some entrepreneurship training opportunities for women in the countryside and some of the women agreed to come. And when the day arrived, no woman showed up. She found out afterwards that she had to ask their husbands if they can come to this course. And another problem was that the event was happening at the village pub, and women were not allowed to enter that male territory. How can a woman from a community like that can be empowered?

That's very hard. Because they have been living in the system for a pretty long time. And they're probably part of this system because they had to adapt to it, in order to survive, in order to keep their mental health and their physical health. Of course, you have to make interventions if people are in actual danger. That's a question for the police forces and not for people like me. But my point would be to address the male side and to address the system rather than to address the women.

I think female empowerment always has to be accompanied by male education, and by male work and by male change of perspective, and by male realisation of their privilege and of the system they live in. That sounds very academic, I know. And that's part of the problem, because I don't think these ideas can trickle down being imposed on a highly academic discourse, and then go to the people. There have to be alliances, among groups, and among NGOs and among governmental initiatives in order to educate people, in order to show that this kind of system is no longer accepted. Not by law, not by society, not by the male allies that we might have to find.

I think the idea of a male ally could be one very helpful. An ally, a male ally is not the white knight, it's not the guy on the horse who's saving women or saving other people. It's about engaging other men in conversation. And showing them that there is a way out, showing them that certain kinds of behaviour are no longer being tolerated. The problem with all this is that compared to how some men really behave, it sounds very, very soft this kind of intervention. That's always the problem because you cannot fight antifeminism or misogyny with the same kind of brute force, like masculists and misogynists, keep up their worldviews. So we need to be smarter, we need to be connected, we need to be educating ourselves, we need to share good practices, we need to share our tactics. So I think in the end, it's not the one big intervention that we have, but it's very, very many micro actions that can change systems and overthrow systems. At least that's my positive version of it. I'm usually a bit more passive, not realistic, but I'm trying to stay positive here.

Do you think that feminism can also improve men's lives? Including, I don't know, the fact that they can spend more time with their children, for example.

If they want to spend more time with their children... It's still an individual choice, I guess. But yes, of course.

You don't need to be an outspoken feminist to do so. You can do it for yourself at the beginning. But you become a part of the change. If you educate yourself, if you reflect on your privilege. Even though it doesn't feel like a privilege. If you talk about privilege to some men, they feel offended, because privilege, equality feels like oppression for some people who are privileged. Equality feels like oppression for men who are privileged.
They just don't see it, you have to explain it to them, you have to give them examples, you have to show them how this works. And you have to kind of suck them into this educational process slowly. I know it's not working with all of them. But all the small changes count. And I mean, feminism, of course, it's not a recent phenomenon.

If I talk to feminists that have been active like 30-40 years ago, they tell me that what you're saying is good. But I've been saying this for like ages and so it's still the struggle. And we see the waves, the more autocratic governments become, the more men kind of feel endangered somehow.

Because of their narrow worldview, they don't have alternatives to their roles. You were talking about spending time with their children. It's not only about spending time, it's about taking responsibility for their families. And we're talking about 50%. Like, you don't have to have an Excel sheet. I mean some situations need special solutions, which is totally okay. As long as you can watch it from a broader point of view.

And not from a point of view where women are the default option for bringing up children and doing care work. The problem is that our systems are not built for this. Our systems have a monolithic centrepiece, which is called paid work. And everything has to circle around paid work.

Take me for example, this week is very interesting. I was here until this morning alone with my five year old, he was very sick the last couple of days. My wife is at her mom's, which is like 200 kilometres away. Her mom had to get surgery on her hip. And her mom herself is doing voluntary work for people with dementia, usually. She's 74. So we're all doing care work in different stages, you know, and the only thing we can't do this week is paperwork. So the mistake is in the system. You know, this is not being seen as proper work still.

And it's not only tough all the time, it's very rewarding, and it's very necessary to keep the connections to keep our human connections. Care is an essential part of human life. And we need to have time for this and we need to have energy for this. And by we I mean all of us, not only the women and not only people who say this is it, I like it very much. It's a societal project where men are still being in the position of kind of an audience sometimes, I don't know.

I feel that women cried enough, yelled enough and put these topics on the agenda, with the risk of being called most of the time hysterical. Actually, I’ve heard people saying: oh, those feminist who go topless to crush serious events and stuff like that. Do you fell that there is a stigma on feminists and that the word feminist became pejorative?

Of course. And if you criticize radical feminist for being like you described what are you doing is tone policing. I think this is not the way we should address this. Because I think it is strictly necessary to have radical voices around feminists. Radical voices that I cannot agree with, radical voices that are scaring me, that are challenging my inner perceptions.

We need that as well because feminism is a very broad thing and we can’t not change systems by putting feminism in a very narrow concept and cutting back the radical ideas of feminism. Instead we need these radical ideas to infiltrate the system. It’s like what Trump in a bad way does, it says things that have been unsayable like only months ago and now are the new normal. For the concept, you need to be radical sometimes in order to achieve some move at all. I know Trump is not the best example, but maybe we should found a group called the hysterical men in order to change this perception, in order to be loud, in order to be radical, to get on people’s nerves, to show that hysterical is not an attribute that you should put on somebody who is addressing societal deficiencies and has nothing to do with gender.

We have these double standards. If a female politician is doing a speech in parliament where she is very straightforward, the newspapers won’t say that she was straightforward, the newspapers will probably say that she was not probably in a good mood, or maybe hysterical. It’s still happening and the journalists are playing a massive role because we need journalists to educate themselves. Because sometimes they are transporting gender roles that are really horrible.

We have to talk about framing, to talk about our language, we need to do some gender mainstreaming as well and it’s all about the will to do so.

You know this Robert Frost poem Two roads? He says `I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” Don’t make it too easy for yourself, challenge yourself and you will learn and it doesn’t affect your identity. It broadens your identity if you do not follow the easy solution all the time.

„Stop fixing women, fix the system”…

That’s it. That’s exactly it.
